While it is often easy to pick up some part-time work as a student, this year is proving more difficult than most. But fear not, below are 5 of the best part-time earners that are super easy to fit around studying. The best part is they can all be done from the comfort of your own room.
Selling things you don't use
There’s a gorgeous outfit tucked in the back of everyone's wardrobe. You’ve convinced yourself it's too nice to throw out so you'll wear it eventually. Why not sell it? Selling your clothes has never been easier with useful mobile apps such as Depop. What better time to sell? Giving you a bit of extra cash for the Christmas holidays and someone else has the perfect outfit: it's a win-win for all. It’s not just clothes that’ll get you cash. There are plenty of sites such as eBay, gumtree and marketplace where you can sell nearly everything from a bookcase to `TVs.
Start a small business
Did you get creative during lockdown? You’re not alone. There were a lot of Instagram cake makers cropping up. But don't let your talents go to waste, whether it’s clay earrings, homemade cards or chocolate bouquets, these are all great ways to make money. Though this one might require a little more work it’ll certainly be worth it. You can set up a website in just twenty minutes and off you go. This is perfect for anyone who doesn't like the typical 9-5. Why not be your own boss? With your new business there are some rules, make sure you don’t get caught out. It's super easy to follow on the government website. Find all the rules and guidelines here.
Teach others
You might be thinking this one definitely isn't for me, but before you write it off just read the following. Unlike typical teaching, with tutoring you can pick a topic you are confident in and choose an age to target. Luckily, you won’t be grading papers at the weekend. Tutoring is a great earner and students typically get between £10-£20 an hour. Advertise your services on Facebook, LinkedIn or ask family and friends. Once you start, you’re bound to get lots of students. Still doesn't sound like your cup of tea? You can still make money. See those pretty GCSE notes and old textbooks gathering dust. Sell those on to others, can’t promise you'll make a fortune but it's better than nothing.
Start a blog or podcast
If this appeals to you, read no further. Go get cracking on your first piece! However, if you need a little more convincing here’s why this is a great idea. This is a great opportunity to pick a topic you're passionate about, perhaps something that links to university. If it's a podcast you're going to create, why not get some friends involved? Promote it on social media, get guests to interview for a unique point of view! There's so much you can do to create something different. Even if it doesn't quite draw in the big bucks you're expecting, it'll definitely give you an edge in interviews and job applications!
Sharing your thoughts
You've probably heard “No one asked for your opinion” many times before. Well, that's no longer the case. In fact, companies are willing to pay to hear what you have to say. So, if blogging really isn’t your style or you don’t think you have any original material, why not review other people's work instead? There are a number of different things you can get paid for. One of the most successful ways is taking surveys, find the best rated ones here. But there are plenty of other things to offer your opinion on. You can rate new apps, listen to music, trial video games or review new films.
So, there's the top 5, but this is by no means your only choices. You can find many more ideas on Save the Student.
